The choices are many, but mitered and waterfall edges are increasing in popularity.
Choosing the right stone may be one of the hardest decisions to make when it comes to installing stone countertops, but for many, picking the right edge can be downright challenging.
Straight, bevel, bullnose, ogee, raw, rope… the list goes on and on. Not to mention the endless variety of custom edges. Of course, the cost of creating these detailed edges varies with the workmanship involved.
One edge that has been gaining popularity in recent years is the mitered edge. What’s unique about this edge is that it gives the illusion of a thicker countertop, but without the added expense. The edge of the counter is cut at a 45-degree angle, then a two or three-inch strip of the stone is cut at an inverted 45-degree angle and placed vertically at the edge.
Cutting long, clean, mitered edges for stone was once very hard to create, but recent advances in miter saws have made that job easier and more cost-efficient.
Some mitered edges continue all the way to the floor, creating what’s called a “waterfall” edge. This seamless look breaks away from traditional countertop designs by creating a wonderful flow—giving the kitchen a striking, unified impression. This edge is also a great way to showcase unique markings in the stone.
As far as popularity, the half bullnose is way at the top of the list. It’s half round on the top and flat on the bottom, creating a seamless flow that tends to hide the edge altogether.
The beveled edge is for those who want an impactful look that stands out, reflects more light and adds an extra dimension to countertops.
The square edge is another common choice for many homeowners. It’s simple, slightly rounded at the top and bottom, and usually the most affordable of all the edging choices because it’s the easiest to create.
